About Freightliner

By the 1960s, Freightliner wanted to lower the import tariffs which were being imposed by the Canadian government at the time. To accomplish this, the company opened its very first manufacturing facility in Canada by 1961 at Burnaby in British Columbia. Around the same time, the company made plans to boost production within the U.S. by opening additional assembly plants in Indianapolis, Indiana and Chino, California. In Portland an additional parts production facility was opened in 1969.

About Freightliner Century Class

The Century Class is a sloped hood, aerodynamic truck which has a Class 8 rating which was first introduced by Freightliner in 1995. It is the replacement for the FLD truck although it stayed in production until 2001. Some of the new features found in the Century Class include an air bag for the driver’s side, enhanced mounting restraints for the seats, and a Backpack and Driver’s Lounge option.

Drivers have access to extra storage space and 2005 models were revised so the headlamps were enlarged with a jeweled design, along with a new front grille with bigger horizontal bars than previous editions. The Century Class was so well received by consumers that by 2001 it had become the company’s flagship model.

It comes with a number of engine options, the most popular of which is the Caterpillar C13, Caterpillar 3406E, the Detroit Diesel Series 60 and the Cummins ISX. It has a manual transmission that ranges from 8 to 18 speed along with an Allison 4500 RDS automatic.

Common Freightliner Century Class A/C Problems

The Century Class, like most Freightliner trucks, utilizes a basic dial which can be seen near the control HVAC unit. It is responsible for managing the air conditioning system setting. When the A/C is turned on, the compressor sound is distinctive.

Drivers should hear a humming sound which is low that is followed by an activating cooling fan. However, some drivers report that they don’t hear this sound, which means that the compressor is either leaking or has become faulty. If either scenario is the case, the compressor will have to be replaced.
