About Freightliner

Freightliner is best known for its manufacture of semi-trucks, also known as eighteen wheelers. By 1985 they introduced the FLC112, or Medium Conventional Series, which utilized passenger cabins that had been designed by Mercedes-Benz. The two companies would continue to collaborate on a number of projects and Mercedes Benz based cabins continued appearing in various Freightliner models. By 1989 the company purchased a standing facility at Cleveland, North Carolina which had previously been used for the production of German MAN transit buses.

About Freightliner Columbia

The Freightliner Columbia is powered by a C15 Caterpillar engine and is the truck of choice for interstate transport and commerce. Tests conducted on this truck indicate that it can haul up to sixty tons and will perform especially well on terrain which is relatively flat. However, it is fully capable of handling tighter road junctions and shorter climbs with ease. It has a sleek and smooth appearance with a front bonnet that is curved with teardrop style headlights that are inset, which give it a lower drag coefficient.

Its exhaust stacks have been neatly tucked and the mirrors are shrouded with paint colors that match the body work. Because the mirrors are enclosed, they use less space yet provide the operator with an enhanced view behind their cab. Those that purchase the Columbia day cab will get the C15 ACERT Caterpillar engine which can generate up to 550 horsepower. The engine is calibrated in such a way where it will work hardest within a reduced rev range while maintaining adequate fuel efficiency.

Common Freightliner Columbia A/C Problems

Some truckers have encountered an issue where the A/C clutch has no power. They reported that after shutting down the truck and then starting it the next day its A/C clutch would initially engage and then blow out cold air, but after turning the air conditioning off even briefly the clutch won’t engage anymore. Mechanics have tested the compressor through running the jumper cables between the clutch and alternator and in most instances this makes the A/C work, and confirms that the fuses are good, so it is likely that the problem is related to air pressure.
